New Player Info.

Thanks for checking out our clubs.

Our number one goal is for everyone to learn how to play rugby and have fun.

If you have any concerns or questions please let one of the coaches know .  Your opinion matters a lot because we want our club to grow. So we invite your input.

Be Patient

It will take awhile for you to learn the game, so be patient. Unlike other contact sports, rugby is a game that you can play the rest of your life. Many colleges are now offering rugby scholarships and there are many men teams around that a person can join after their high school playing days are over.

Coaches

All rugby coaches must be certified by Ohio Rugby. To get this cerification each coach must attend an all day coaching session and then pass a test. Additional each year a coach must complete classes on concussions and player safety.

Combined Coach Swope and Coach Switzer have 75 years of rugby experience. We are always looking for assistant coaches let us know if you would like to volunteer as a coach.

Eligibility to play

Any boy in grades 9-12 is allowed to play for our club. You don't have to be a student enrolled with Anthony Wayne School to be a member of our club.  No physical is required, however rugby more than anything is a running sport,so you should be in good physical shape.

Register

You must register with Ohio rugby. Rugby Ohio is the governing body of high school rugby. Which is similar to the Ohio Athletic Association that other high school sports belong to.

To register go to Ohio rugby web page which is www.rugbyohio.com or you can click the link tab at top of our home page and scroll to Rugby Ohio.

Team Forms

You will also have 4 team forms to fill  out and turn into Coach Switzer. You can print these forms off by clicking the tabs at the top of our home page.

The 4  forms needed to be filled out are:

1.driving permission form injury treatment form        2. injury treatment form

    3. player information form                                         4. socks/dshorts order form

Cost to play

We are not associated with any school or organization. The only money we receive comes from player dues, donations and fund raisers. Please don't let money be a factor for you not to play. We can work out some type of arrangement and Rugby Ohio also offers a $90.00 hardship scholarship that you can apply for.

The total cost to play is $145.00.

However, there maybe more additional costs if you need to buy socks and shorts or would like to purchase a club jacket.

This total cost of $145.00 (not including the additional costs) is made up 2 separate fees.

The first fee of $120.00 is to be paid when you register with Rugby Ohio.   This fee is used to pay for referees, athletic trainers and league expenses . You can pay this fee by a credit card  or you can mail a check to Rugby Ohio. (note there is a small additional cost if you pay by credit card)

The second fee of $25.00 is a club fee and is paid directly to Coach Switzer.  This club fee is used to pay for club expenses such as field paint, rugby balls, and food for the after game socials.  You can pay this fee by a check or cash. Checks need to be made out to Kevin Switzer

Possible Additional costs that will be included with the club fee

$10.00 for game socks- All  players must wear the same game socks. The club will order the socks so, they will all be the same. You don't have to buy socks if you have a pair from a previous year.

$25.00 for black rugby shorts.  All players must wear pure black shorts. You can wear a pair of black nylon shorts, but they don't wear as well or look as good as Rugby shorts. Rugby shorts will last a couple of years. Meaning you shouldn't have to buy another pair during your high school career. The club can order these for you or can order your own on line.

cost for team jackets/hoodies is TBD.  We must have a minimum order of 5 per item to place a order.

What other equipment is needed

Cleats - Each player should wear cleats. Tennis shoes don't work very well especially on a rainy day.

Cleats-can be soccer or football cleats. It they are football cleats the front cleat must be taken out before playing.

              Baseball cleats are not allowed.

If you want regular rugby cleats you must order them on-line. The sporting  stores around Toledo such as

              Dicks don't carry rugby cleats.

mouthguard-- Every player must wear a mouthguard for every practice and game. The first 2 mouthguards for each player                             will be supplied by the team.  After that, a player who loses a mouthguard will need to pay the cost for a third

                       one.

game jersey- Will be supplied by the team. They will be handed out before each game and collected at the end of each game.

Injuries

Rugby is a contact sport and there is always a risk of injuries. When rugby is played correctly there are very few injuries as compared to other sports. We do have an athletic trainer at every game for injury care. All players or parents must report an injury to a coach no matter how small it is.

Practices:

You can only become a better rugby player by practicing- You must attend at least on practice during the week to participate in that week's game. Please let a coach know if you can't make practice.

We will be practicing on Sunday 1-3,  Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 -7:30  (this is after the time change for daylight savings). We will never have anything on Friday once we get into March. Depending on the weather practices will either be at Baer Park in Waterville or at Browning Nursing Home (for directions to practice field and game fields go to  the team website click on locations)

The only time we won't practice is if there is lighting or if the temperature is below 40 degrees. (Coaches are wimps) Please dress according to the temperature and always check the web page for updates or cancellations of practices or games. Emails and texts alerts will be sent if practice is canceled.

Games:

Check the schedule on Web page for games locations and times. Most games  will be played on Sundays, Wednesdays and  Thursdays and just a few (mostly playoff games in May) on Saturday

Home games will be played this year at Browning Masonic Nursing home.

Parents and Coaches drive players to away games. Players can drive only if I have permission from their parents (driver permission form)

There is a post game social after every home game. Players will be required to bring a food item chips, cookies, pop etc. There is a sign-up sheet for parents to sign for helping to serve food after the game. This takes 15 minutes at the most and you won't miss watching the game

Captains

We will have 2 captains. One to be voted by the players and one to be picked by the coaches. In rugby captains have a very important role. They must be the club's biggest cheerleaders and team rrecruiter . They must know the laws of the game and control their teammates during game competition. They will also have input in player selection for games.

Club Rules

Only 1- Don't do anything to embarrass or tarnish our club image.

That's about it- If you have any questions please ask - We want rugby to be enjoyable sport for you to play

see you on the pitch
